30 Quotes in 30 Days – Day 6

“If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be”

– Maya Angelou

Conforming has got to be one of the worst diseases in life. Life, society and the world wants us to fit in and be slaves to the system.

It starts with school where they teach you how to fit into society and limit creativity as you get older. At some point in our lives we were probably all great artists, great musicians and had the most confidence ever (between the age of 1 and 8) then society tells us to tone it down and just like a mental health centre will give patients mind numming drugs, society gives us mind numming things like the invention of T.V, social media etc.

Its crazy because when you do your research, you will understand how the messages hidden within T.V, adverts, radio etc are designed to keep you numb and reliant on such tools. Whilst i do watch T.V. and listen to music etc, i am mindful of what i consume just like eating processed food is bad for your diet, bad T.V. is bad for your mind.

I personally know im different and whilst i don’t generally hide it, sometimes i just get on with it and people can tell im different. Do different to get different. And another food for thought, what exactly is ‘normal’? Normal does not exist. What’s normal for me will be totally abnormal to many others. Plus society and cultural differences.

Take away from this is dont be afraid to do you. I haven’t been and i have flourished. We have to live with the fact that we will never please everyone in life and if we can accept and understand that, half the battle is won! There is so much beauty and art in difference.
