30 Quotes in 30 Days – Day 12

“Define success on your own terms, achieve it by your own rules, and build a life you are proud to live”

– Anne Sweeney

I deleted my Instagram account probably 3 years ago now, if not longer and it was the best thing I ever done. If I wasn’t  a DJ and loved my hobby, i would erase all trace of me online and live outside social media.

Whether you know it or not, 95% of us are influenced every day by social media and adverts. We see people on the gram posting pics of fabulous bodies, luxury cars, jewelry, money and what appears to be the perfect life. In addition to this, all these apps now a days are tapping into your phone and history and building a picture of who you are and are targeting you with adverts and posts selling you that dream.

I would be working hard doing my thing and I would see people who didn’t appear to work hard looking like they had a lot and had achieved a lot but social media is often false and is a typical I am a millionaire when really you don’t have 3 months worth of savings in your account. This really affected me because whilst I don’t believe in jealousy, I was questioning myself and was asking myself what success looks like and how does one define success?

I have come up with a conclusion, there is no definition of success. Success means so many different things to so many different people. Success to one person could be getting a promotion at work, own a 3 bedroom house, get married and have 3 lovely kids, where as someone else may define success in monetary terms such as having 6 figures in the bank etc. Once i understood this, life became transparent. Success is happiness. If you are happy and feel like you are living your best life every day or as often as you can, then surely that is success. I go back to a book I highly recommend, ‘A Mans Search For Meaning’, this book will help you put into perspective what is important in life and what is not.

Take away from this is live life on your own terms. Yes, have role models and mentors who you admire and look up to but I can assure you that what works for them, will not always necessary work for you or make you happy. Follow a recipe but add your own spices and herbs on the way and i bet you it will taste better than anything you have ever tasted before. Do you! Be you!

Thank you for reading this. I hope you enjoyed it. Let me know if you have. Thank you!
